27th December It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Dennis Robinson on the morning of Saturday 22nd December. Our thoughts are with Barbara and the rest of their family at this very sad time. Dennis was a great supporter of the ladies section and for many years allowed his home to be taken over for the annual BBQ.

His funeral will be held on Thursday 3rd January at 2pm at St Edmunds Church in Sedgefield and then on to Durham crematorium. Everyone is then invited to the Dunn Cow at Sedgefield and the family have asked for donations in lieu of flowers to either the Motor Neurone Disease Association or the Butterwick Hospice in Stockton. It would be helpful if you could all pass this information on to other section members so that we can support Barbara at this very difficult time

9th December I should not have worried about you all entering into the Christmas spirit and getting costumes organised for the Turkey Trot. It was great to see so many people at the competition and how much effort so many people had put into their costumes. It was especially fun to see everyone contending with their costumes out on the course, there was many a rustle, jingling of bells and even a rendering of Frosty the Snowman in our group  - thank you so much for taking part with such enthusiasm and congratulations to Jack Frost AKA Liz Nelson.

I hope everyone enjoyed the day - I know it got a bit cold out on the course. Congratulations to the golf, quiz and bingo winners and many thanks to all members of the section who worked hard behind the scenes to to help with the organisation - it would not have happened without you - so many thanks.

Please put the 10th February in your diaries for the "Sports Maker" event and help to raise funds for the club, encourage participation in sport and get a free Adidas polo shirt!

2nd December Well, an "interesting" day on the golf course today!! The frozen ground make golf very difficult (at least that's my excuse). It took some doing even to get the tee pegs into the ground let alone chip or putt under those conditions. Anyway, after all the rain it was nice to get outside in the sunshine, even if it was rather slippery underfoot. I hope everyone is looking forward to the Turkey Trot next week and that you have got your costumes organised.
25th November What dreadful weather, there is currently is a river running across the first fairway towards the 8th. Hopefully things will improve towards the end of the week and we'll be able to play next weekend.

I will need to give the catering staff the numbers for the meal after the Turkey Trot next weekend, so please ensure that your name is on the list in the locker room or if you cannot make it up to the course to sign up then just let me know before 9am next Sunday.

The Golf Section AGM was held this week and Geoff Bowles reported back from Washington Developments that they do not think that they will be starting any work on the development of the course until quarter 4 next year at the earliest. This provides us with some certainty for the summer season that we should be able to get through our fixtures without any trouble (weather permitting of course!).

18th November Mildred is doing a flower demonstration at Sedgefield Parish Hall on Tuesday (20th November) starting at 7:30. Tickets are £7.50 and will be available on the door. It would be nice, as Mildred does so much to raise funds for the club, if some people are able to attend what I'm sure will be another great evening. We raised a magnificent £632.50 from our flower evening. Many thanks to everyone who sold tickets and worked hard on the day to make it such a success.

The golf section AGM is being held on Thursday (22nd) starting at 7pm and the Durham County Ladies Golf Association AGM is being held at Durham Girls High School at 10:30am on Saturday 24th November.

They remembered to open the clubhouse on Tuesday and so I'm now officially your lady captain. Maggie was given a gift of some earrings as a memento of her year to match some that she lost on holiday. I was thrilled to be able to announce at the AGM that Margaret Russell has agreed to take on the Captaincy after me. This will provide certainty to the section during what may be a period of great change for the club should Washington Development's plans come to fruition.

11th November Don't forget the AGM is on Tuesday 13th November at 7:30pm in the Clubhouse (if they remember to open it this year!).

Many thanks to Mildred for putting on such a wonderful flower demonstration on Tuesday she really is so very talented. My thanks also to everyone who sold tickets and those section members who manned the raffle stall and the entry table. A special mention should go to Natasha who has been knitting furiously making ear warmers and had also made some bracelets and earrings which she sold in aid of club funds. Many thanks to you all.

4th November Despite the fact that a number of people could not make Presentation Evening on Friday, those that attended celebrated all the winners of the competitions held throughout the year. It was remarkable, given this summer's weather, that we managed to get through all the trophy competitions and it was nice to get together to congratulate the winners. Many thanks to Margaret Russell and Pat who helped set up the room and get all the trophies organised. Maggie had a torrid week with Len in hospital and did a great job sorting out the arrangements to ensure that the evening was a success.

Don't forget the annual flower demonstration is on Tuesday (6th November at 7:30). There are still some spare tickets available (from committee members).

I have been really touched by all the messages of support that I have had over the past week when people had heard that I had agreed to take on the Captaincy - I just hope I don't let you all down. Notices are up for the Turkey Trot on the 9th December, please get your thinking caps on for you Christmas themed golf gear!

28th October The committee met on Monday as scheduled to discuss the captaincy for 2012/2013 - Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. Well you have well and truly called my bluff as I received the most nominations! I was very surprised and flattered and after some thought I have decided to give it a go (despite the fact that I said I would not do it again until I retired). I have asked the person who received the 2nd highest number of nominations to consider whether they would be vice captain (it would be unfair to put any more pressure on them by naming them until they have said that they will do the job).

Don't forget that Presentation Evening is on Friday (2nd November) at the golf club and then the annual flower demonstration from Mildred is being held on Tuesday 6th November at 7:30. If you require any tickets for the event then please see any committee member - the cost is £7.50 and that includes a glass of wine or a soft drink.

14th October We are nearly at the end of another golfing year and it is time to look for a new Captain. If you are interested in doing this job then please let Maggie (or in fact any committee member) know. Alternatively, you may think that an existing member of the club would make a good captain and that perhaps if they thought they had the backing of the rest of the section that they may agree to take on this role. Again, please let Maggie have your suggestions or complete a form in the locker room and return it to Margaret Russell. The committee will be meeting on Monday 22nd October to see whether anyone has come forward and to have a look at any suggestions made by section members. It is important that we have a captain and the duties of this role have been significantly reduced to try and encourage all members of the section to take it on.

30th September Another week and another hole in one. This time it was Liz Nelson who got her second hole in one on the 4th - many congratulations.

The list for the Edmenson Trophy to be played on Saturday 6th October is on the notice board. Please sign up by Thursday if you wish to play.

The end of the golfing season is almost upon us (it hardly seems like we have had much summer weather) and therefore the list for the presentation evening to be held on the 2nd November is on the notice board. Please sign up if you wish to attend (the cost is £8.95). Trophies should be returned to Maggie asap so that she can organise the engraving. Would this year's winners please also indicate which prize they would like by completing the list in the locker room.

23rd September Congratulations to Margaret Russell who had a hole in one on the 8th yesterday during the mixed open. Well done to Pat and her band of helpers who organised a very successful event (which was eventually played at the third time of asking). The winners came in with a magnificent 49 points and everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

Will everyone who was presented with a trophy last year, please return it to Maggie asap so that she can organise the engraving for this year's presentation evening.

Please sign the list in the locker room for the exchange day at Catterick. This is being held on Monday 29th October (11:45 for 12:30) coffee and biscuits on arrival and the golf will be followed by a meal.

26th August Well done to the silver Thomlinson Team who won their match against Castle Eden at the first extra hole at Bishop Auckland this week, unfortunately the Bronze team were knock out by Hartlepool. The silver team will now play in the next round at Billingham on 3rd September - I am sure that we all wish they good luck.

The exchange day at Catterick has been re-scheduled for 29th October. Please sign the list in the locker room if you wish to take part.

Please note that the match against the seniors due to be played on Wednesday (29th) has been cancelled as they could not get a team together.

12th August Congratulations to Janice on playing a great round of golf this week and coming in with a net 65 thus reducing her handicap to 11. Also many congratulations to Rebecca who has reduced her handicap to 1!!

The exchange day at Richmond was held this week and enjoyed by all who attended - many thanks to Maggie for arranging this. Maggie has also managed to organise another trip this time to Catterick on 3rd September - please sign the notice in the locker room is you wish to attend. There are also notices up for the following events and it would help those organising them if you could sign up as soon as possible if you wish to take part:-

Invitation Day - Monday 20th August 13:24 - 15:00
Team of Team - Saturday 18th August
Seniors v Ladies - Wednesday 29th August 9:30

Due to the condition of the course, there are a number of ladies who have not yet managed to hand in 3 cards for handicap this year. If you are not sure whether you have got all your cards in please either ask me or look at the notice in the locker room near the handicap list. You need to hand in 3 cards each year in order to maintain an active handicap.

1st August Another very busy week (especially for Maggie). The trip to Linden Hall went very well with Olivia winning the Woodham Waywards trophy on day 1 and Maggie, Tracey and myself winning the Texas Scramble on day 2 with a storming 50 points! Lady Captain's was very enjoyable Maggie and her family worked very hard to ensure that everything went according to plan. The room was beautifully decorated for the meal after the golf and everyone was a winner with prizes galore.

Three team matches were also played this week with the evening league team winning both of their games.

22nd July There are still spaces if you wish to sign up for Lady Captain's Day on the 29th July. There are bacon butties from 9am with the first players teeing off at 10:04. There will be a carvery meal after the golf (the cost of which is £7). Full details are on the notice board in the locker room.

Woodham Waywards is being held at Linden Hall on Wednesday and Thursday this week full details are on the social events page

15th July Not so much golf played recently as the course has been closed - I've never known the course to be so wet for so long at this time or year, it really has been a dreadful "summer". The difficult decision was taken not to run the Mixed Open yesterday and re-schedule it for the 22nd September. These decisions are never easy to make and having spoken to the ground staff on Friday there was no way that the full course was going to be open yesterday. Having played the course today, it probably still should not be open as its very muddy and there are new lakes all over the course!

Don't forget forget to sign up for Lady Captain's Day on the 29th July. There are bacon butties on arrival with the first players teeing off around 10am as normal (you pick your own tee-off time). Maggie is looking for people to provide refreshments for the halfway house and then there will be a carvery meal after the golf (the cost of which is £7). Full details are on the notice board in the locker room.

There is also a notice up for the away day to Richmond (9th August 11:45 for 12:30 start) - please sign up if you wish to take part in what will be a totally free game of golf (coffee and meals included apparently!).

Last week's competition, the Pam Heslop Dovetail Scramble, has been re-scheduled for the 2nd September.

Good luck to Liz Nelson and Natasha who are playing in the Coronation Foursomes at Alnmouth on Tuesday,

2nd July What a lot of golf I've played this weekend, we had a team match on Friday followed by the club championship. It felt like a test of endurance as well as a test of golf. Luckily, despite the mixed weather, we did not get too wet. Many congratulations to Margaret Nisbet who played two very steady rounds of golf to win the club championship by 7 clear shots.

Don't forget Men's Captain's Day next Saturday and sign the list on the main notice board if you with to take part.

The draw for the match-play knockout competition has been completed and is in the locker room (I'll add it to the web site next weekend as I forgot to bring it home with me!!).

24th June There have been a lot of team matches this week (with mixed results). I guess this must mean that summer is here, but with the weather and the condition of the course it really doesn't feel like the season has got started. However, its the club championship next weekend so bring your "A" game with you!!

Men's Captain's Day is being held on the 7th July and there are prizes for the ladies. Please sign the list on the main notice board if you with to take part. Some tee times have been reserved specifically for the ladies, but if they are not suitable you can sign up wherever there is a space.

There are only 4 names down in each division for the match-play knockout competition. We'd really like to get 8 in each group so the deadline for entries has been extended to next Sunday (1st July).

HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY ROZ for 29th June

10th June What a summer - the course was closed today so the Maxwell Scramble has been re-arranged for 30th September.

I'm sure we all wish Chris Quinn a speedy recovery from her broken arm (having fallen over whilst gardening). She has X-rays next week to check that the bones have been re-aligned correctly and if all is well the plaster will be off in 5 weeks.  We also hope that Roz is able to get back out onto the golf course soon after suffering problems with her back.

3rd June Better fortunes in the County Matches this week as the Afternoon League team have an excellent 5-2 win against Eaglecliffe.

Everyone made an effort today to dress in red, white and blue (it was amazing the number of people who claimed to own only one item of red clothing). Congratulations to Chris Quinn who decorated her trolley and hat as well as wearing plenty of red white and blue and won the bottle of wine.

24th May Mixed fortunes with the teams this week with the Sivewright team having another good win away from home against Darlington. The evening league team were well beaten in their match at Durham City but hopefully will get their revenge in the return game.

The Richard Jones memorial scramble is being played on Saturday 2nd June. There are still s few slots early in the morning, but in addition to these, the ladies have been allocated additional slots between 10:15 and 11:30. Teams of three are required (any mixture of ladies, gents and juniors). These later tee times can be booked through the pro shop.

20th May Congratulations to the Sivewright Team who won their latest match at home against Whitburn 5-0.
13th May The balance for Linden Hall is due to be paid by the end of the month. Please give your cheques to Liz Nelson asap.

Maggie raised £84 for Cancer Relief by running a raffle over the last few weeks - congratulations to all the winners (the prize list is on the notice board in the locker room).

Congratulations to the Sivewright Team who won their match away at Blackwell Grange 3.5 - 1.5. The Afternoon League match at home against Boldon was cancelled as the course was closed (we don't seem to be having much luck with their matches as both the home and away fixtures have been cancelled and will need to be re-arranged).

6th May Many many congratulations to Rebecca who defended her County Championship very well. Unfortunately, she was beaten in the final by 8 times winner Pauline Dobson of South Moor. What a remarkable achievement, she must have been under enormous pressure to do as well as last year and did brilliantly to get to the final. She was the leading junior qualifier and won the Burn Trophy.

Neither of the county team matches due to be played this week went ahead as the courses were closed. They will be re-arranged for another date.

The friendly game against Richmond has provisionally be scheduled for the 9th Aug (at Richmond). Maggie will be looking for about 12-15 players to take part in this game.

29th April The course was very wet again this week with only 17 holes open and the 5th playing short. As the forecast wasn't great as well the Directors' Cup was played over just 9 holes as a stableford competition and the medal was cancelled.

Due to the lack of numbers playing, the "bring a bottle" has also been extended to next week.

The Lady Captain's raffle in aid of Cancer Research will be drawn at the May Day Mixed on 7th May - Tickets are available from Maggie and there are some very good prizes to be won.

If you have put your name down to play in the Vine Trophy please ensure that you get your entry fee (£21 per team) to Natasha by the end of next weekend so that she can send the entries off in good time.

The friendly game against Richmond which was due to be played this week has been cancelled and will be re-arranged for later in the season.

Sign-up sheets for the knock-out competitions are now on display in the locker room.

22nd April The course was so wet this morning that only a few hardy soles ventured out in the mud.

It was decided to ask everyone to "bring a bottle" next week in lieu of their entry fee to ensure that we have plenty of raffle prize for throughout the season - Please try to remember and bring a bottle if you can.

Despite the weather the season has now really started as the first two team matches were held this week. Well done to the Afternoon Anderson League Team who won away from home at Durham City. The Sivewright team lost a very close match away to Whitburn 3.5 - 1.5.

25th March Woodham have been asked to host the County Juniors in a practice game for their match against Lancashire (which is being played at Woodham). This is to be held on Wednesday 4th April with the first tee time at 12.04. The format of the game will be a four ball better ball with a Woodham player paired with a County Junior. The idea of the game is that the juniors learn how to play the course by playing with a lady who is familiar with it. Ten Woodham ladies are required and if you are interested then please let Margaret Nisbet know. All players should arrive for 11:30 on the day when the teams will be organised.
18th March Well done to Maggie Brown and Margaret Russell who won a very close match against Bishop Auckland in the Daily Mail Foursomes on the second extra hole yesterday. Considering that they had to give 14 shots it was a remarkable achievement. Let's hope that the next match isn't quite so taxing! Many thanks to Janice and Tracey who caddied and the other supporters.
11th March Please sign up if you are available to play in the team matches - the dates for all three teams are on the notice board and also on the County Matches page of the web site. The fixture list page of the web site has been updated with the new fixtures for 2012 - This is currently being checked (but hopefully I haven't made too many errors!).

Maggie Brown and Margaret Russell are playing their their Daily Mail foursomes match at Woodham next Saturday morning (tee-off at 11:08) - supporters are welcome and I'm sure that we all wish them good luck against Bishop Auckland.

Please remember that the weekly cost of the competitions has been increased to £1.50 in order to improve the section's finances. Car Park raffle tickets are still available for sale and will be drawn at Easter.

Those players wishing to take part in the Durham County matches are asked to ensure that they sign up in good time and give their entrance fee to Natasha at least a week prior to the date that the entry sheet needs to be posted.

26th February Unfortunately the Mail on Sunday team lost a very close match away to Darlington 2-3.
19th February The Mail on Sunday team to play away against Darlington on Sunday 26th February is as follows:-
  • Margaret Nisbet
  • Anita Maxwell
  • Maggie Brown
  • Tracey Hahn
  • Janice Blakey.

Woodham Waywards deposits of £24 should be paid by the 1st March (cheques to Liz Nelson please).

The Past Captain's Dinner is to take place on Friday 24th February. Please let Barry Watkin know if you would like to attend.

15th February The Mail on Sunday match away against Darlington has been scheduled to take place on Sunday 26th February.
8th February We have just received the draw for the Mail on Sunday and have got an away tie against Darlington. This has to be played by the 4th March and we are currently waiting for them to propose some dates.

The draw for the Daily Mail Foursomes has also been done and Maggie Brown and Margaret Russell will be playing against Bishop Auckland.

15th January Barry Watkin has been announced as Captain for 2012. He is currently arranging the Past Captains' dinner which is to be held on 24th February. The cost will be approximately £14 per person.

Car Park Raffle Tickets are available from committee members.

Please remember to sign up for Woodham Waywards at Linden Hall and pay your deposit of £24 by 1st March.

8th January

I hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. Looking forward to the summer, Maggie is currently trying to sort out the fixture list for 2012 and once this has been confirmed I will add it to the web site. In the meantime don't forget to sign up for the Woodham Waywards trip to Linden Hall which has been arranged for July 25th and 26th.The cost is £99 per person plus £5 for the prize fund for those sharing a room and this includes bed, breakfast and evening meal, two rounds of golf and 1 bottle of wine between 4. Bacon rolls and coffee on arrival are available for an additional £5 for those who want this. Single rooms are available at an additional cost.
